39.) Visit Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa

This was a pretty easy one to check off the list. I live in San Luis Obispo and walk by the Mission often. Still, I had to include it for the sake of completeness.

The grounds of Mission San Luis Obispo hold a statue of Fr. Junipero Serra, the Spanish missionary who founded a number of Missions along California’s El Camino Real trail. Serra was recently anointed as a Saint by the Catholic Church. His statue stands a few feet away from a large cross, stoic reminders that Mission San Luis Obispo is, above all things, a Catholic church.

21st century culture trends haven’t been kind to the Missions. Seen by many as monuments to European Colonialism, their shared legacy can be difficult to reconcile. A large hotel project a few blocks away from Mission San Luis Obispo changed its name from Hotel Serra to Hotel Cerro; its namesake now refers to a local mountain peak instead of the Catholic missionary.

Mission San Luis Obispo contains a small museum (with requisite gift shop). There’s also a garden courtyard behind the main building that’s usually open to the public.
